Chacas is a charming Andean town located in the province of Asunción, in the Áncash region of Peru. Sitting at over 3,300 meters above sea level, this hidden gem of the Callejón de Conchucos perfectly blends history, art, and breathtaking mountain scenery, offering travelers a truly authentic highland experience.

Its main square, surrounded by cobblestone streets and traditional houses with finely carved wooden balconies, reflects the colonial legacy that the town proudly preserves. One of its main attractions is the Church of Santa Rosa de Lima, home to stunning religious artworks crafted by the talented artisans of the Don Bosco workshops, world-renowned for their masterful work in wood, stone, and stained glass.

Beyond its cultural richness, Chacas offers spectacular panoramic views of the Cordillera Blanca, along with scenic hiking routes, natural viewpoints, and the warm hospitality of its people. From here, visitors can reach the Punta Olímpica Pass, the highest tunnel in the Americas, and enjoy an unforgettable journey through snow-capped peaks, turquoise lagoons, and deep valleys.

TRAVEL PROGRAM

We leave Huaraz around 8:30 a.m. heading north through the Callejón de Huaylas towards Carhuaz, a cozy Andean town famous for its handmade ice creams made with natural local fruits. From here, we take the Carhuaz-Chacas road, climbing through a beautiful valley full of native plants, small villages, and herds of llamas and alpacas.

Along the way, we stop at the Ulta viewpoint, where you can enjoy an incredible panorama of the Huascarán, Contrahierbas, Mateo, Chopicalqui, and Chequiaraju snow peaks - a perfect spot for photos. We continue to the Punta Olímpica Pass (4,736 m), crossing the highest trans-Andean tunnel in the world (1,384 m long), which connects the Callejón de Huaylas with the Conchucos region.

We’ll visit the Cancaracá, Yanaraju, and Contrahierbas lagoons, with crystal-clear turquoise waters surrounded by glaciers. Then we arrive in Chacas, a charming town known for its carved wooden balconies, cobblestone streets, and the Mama Ashu Sanctuary. We’ll also visit the Don Bosco workshop, where local artisans make beautiful wooden art and stained glass pieces.

After some free time to walk around and take photos, we start our return to Huaraz, arriving around 6:30 p.m.
