Archaelogical Zone - Garu

The Archaeological Zone of Garu, located in the province of Lauricocha, Huánuco, is considered one of the most representative pre-Hispanic settlements of the central Andes. It served as a political, administrative, and ceremonial center that flourished during the pre-Inca and Inca periods, originally associated with the Yarowilca culture and later incorporated into the Inca Empire.

The site is notable for its stone constructions, including rectangular and circular enclosures, internal passageways, and spaces used for ritual and administrative activities. Its strategic location in the highlands provided control over important communication routes and strengthened regional dominance.

Today, Garu stands as an invaluable testimony to the social, political, and cultural development of the Andean peoples, offering visitors a direct connection to Peru’s ancestral heritage.

TRAVEL PROGRAM

At 05:30 AM we set out towards the district of Choras, traveling through picturesque Andean landscapes. Along the way, we pass Ayapitej, where the striking stone formation known as “The Inca’s Crown” (Lacshahuarina) rises in majestic silence, a natural monument that seems to guard the path. Continuing through Llicllatambo, the horizon opens to reveal the imposing peaks of the Huayhuash mountain range, one of the most breathtaking sights in the Andes.

Upon reaching Choras, we begin our hike along an ancient trail built by the Yaros (Pre-Inca), a living testimony of ancestral engineering that leads us to the monumental citadel of Garú. Here, history and mystery come alive as we walk through its corridors and marvel at its architectural wonders: the Temple of the Three Crosses, the enigmatic Seven Windows, the Twin Towers standing tall against the sky, and the strategic viewpoint that offers a sweeping panorama of the valley.

At a convenient time, we will enjoy our lunch surrounded by the energy of this sacred place, before making our return to the city of Huánuco.
