Chavín de Huántar is one of the most important archaeological sites in ancient Peru, located in the highlands of Áncash, in the valley of the Mosna River. It was the capital of the Chavín culture, which flourished around 1200 to 400 B.C. The site stands out for its impressive stone architecture, temples, underground galleries, and finely carved sculptures.

Chavín de Huántar served as a major religious and pilgrimage center, where people from different regions of the Andes came to worship their deities. The most famous monument is the Lanzón Monolith, a stone sculpture that combines human and feline features, symbolizing spiritual power. The site also reveals advanced knowledge of hydraulic and acoustic engineering, showing the great skill of its builders.

Today, Chavín de Huántar is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains a living testament to the worldview, artistry, and influence of one of the most remarkable cultures of ancient Peru.

TRAVEL PROGRAM

At 9:00 a.m., we begin our full-day cultural and nature adventure heading south from Huaraz toward the town of Catac, where we take a scenic detour into the Conchucos Valley. Our first stop is the beautiful Querococha Lagoon (3,980 m), surrounded by breathtaking mountain views. Here, we’ll also observe the famous “Map of Peru”, a natural rock formation that astonishingly resembles the shape of the country.

We then continue our journey through the Kawish Tunnel (4,516 m), an impressive engineering work that connects the Callejón de Huaylas with the Conchucos region. As we cross to the other side, the landscape transforms dramatically, leading us toward the ancient village of Chavín.

Upon arrival, we visit the Archaeological Complex of Chavín de Huántar (3,140 m), located at the confluence of the Wachecsa and Mosna rivers. During approximately one hour, we explore its most remarkable attractions: the replica of the Raimondi Stela, the Square Plaza, the Choque Chinchay Altar, the Falcon Portal, the Circular Plaza, and the mystical Lanzón Monolith, one of the most sacred symbols of Andean spirituality. We also enter the stone galleries, ceremonial passages, and underground tunnels, uncovering the mysteries of this ancient sanctuary.

After the visit, we enjoy a delicious lunch, followed by a stop at the Chavín National Museum, where we admire original artifacts and sculptures that reveal the sophistication of this pre-Inca culture.

Finally, we begin our journey back to Huaraz, arriving around 7:00 p.m., after an unforgettable experience that blends history, nature, and culture in one extraordinary day.
